PUBLICATION DESIGN

Reframe is an annual mental health journal published by the Mariwala Health Initiative (MHI). In its sixth issue, we came on board to redesign the publication from scratch and make it more accessible to a global audience.

The final output was an elaborately illustrated, meticulously detailed 120-page print publication and an interactive microsite that allows readers to browse in hand or online. Championing inclusivity and staying true to its theme, Reframe VI brought together over eight illustrators from six countries and brought unique visuals to complex subjects, setting it apart from other mental health publications.

Discover

Reframe is a publication issued by the Mariwala Health Initiative (MHI), an organisation dedicated to mental health in India. Every year, Reframe brings together writers and illustrators from different communities, geographies, and contexts to shed light on a specific theme under the larger umbrella of mental health. Every year, the journal must be represented in a way that is as nuanced as the writing within. This year’s theme was Global Mental Health from the Margins.

Define

In our third year of working on Reframe, we wanted to find another approach to the publication’s design and execution. Our aim was to create a completely new look and feel that supplemented the tone of the book, making it more visual, eye-catching, and additionally, create a microsite available on the web for a wider audience. As a publication in its sixth year, our challenge was to change its form without losing its essence.

Design

In keeping with its theme, this year’s issue included writers from all across the world. Similarly, we worked with illustrators from the same communities to bring forward rich details of lived experiences as well as cultural context.

Apart from feature illustrations, each story had finer details such as infographics and typographic interventions weaved in to make the book more engaging. We also built a website that could be shared with a wider audience with all accessibility features in place.
